Orioles' Historic Streak Ends with Sweep
106-Game Run Snapped in Loss to Blue Jays
Baltimore's dominance over American League opponents came to an end Wednesday night.
The St. Louis Cardinals snapped the Baltimore Orioles' historic 106-game winning streak against American League opponents Wednesday night. The Cardinals won the series finale 6-1, taking the three-game set and ending the Orioles' run that had spanned four seasons.
The Orioles' streak was the third-longest in Major League Baseball history, behind only the New York Yankees' 120-game run from 1947 to 1949 and the Boston Braves' 111-game run from 1915 to 1916. It was also the longest streak by an American League team since the Yankees' run in 1949.
The Orioles' streak began on April 21, 2019, with a 5-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. They went on to win every series they played against American League opponents over the next four seasons, including the 2020 and 2021 World Series.
The Cardinals finally snapped the streak with a 6-3 win in the series opener on Monday night. They followed that up with a 4-1 win in the second game of the series on Tuesday night.
The Orioles' streak was a remarkable accomplishment, and it will likely be many years before another team comes close to matching it. The Cardinals deserve credit for finally putting an end to the streak, and they now have a chance to make their own history by winning the World Series this year.
