Bush, a vocal critic of Israel's Gaza war, faces spending surge ahead of Missouri primary

Cori Bush, a leading critic of Israel's war in Gaza, is facing a spending surge ahead of her Missouri primary. Bush's criticism of Israel's military actions following Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, which killed at least 1,400 people, has ignited outrage and drawn spending from pro-Israel groups.

United Democracy Project spends more than $1 million to support Bush's opponent

The United Democracy Project, the political arm of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), has spent more than $1 million to support Bush's opponent, Wesley Bell. The group has been running ads criticizing Bush's record on Israel and has also been organizing phone banks and other outreach efforts. Bell, a prosecutor, has been endorsed by several pro-Israel groups, including the Missouri Republican Party.

Bush's supporters say that the pro-Israel spending is an attempt to silence her criticism of Israel. They argue that Bush is a strong supporter of Israel but believes that the country's actions in Gaza were disproportionate and counterproductive. Bell's supporters say that Bush's criticism of Israel is out of step with most Missouri voters and that she is not fit to represent the state in Congress.

The Missouri primary is scheduled for August 2. Bush is considered the underdog in the race, but she has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. If she wins the primary, she will face Republican incumbent Ann Wagner in the general election.
